Thor is our first male Maine Coon so we didn’t have any inkling about how fast and big he would grow. Freya and Siggy, his sisters, grew slowly over four years. They are now at the end of their growth cycle, with Siggy weighing 9.5 pounds and Freya, 10. 5
Thor at six months is 11.3 pounds!
Here he is at 2 months shortly before he arrived at our home.

When this photo was taken, he weighed 2.43 pounds. His paws and length were the largest of the litter.
Between months 2 and 6 he gained 9 pounds, or 2.25 pounds per month.
Here he is at 3 months, 4+ pounds. The difference in one month is impressive. You can see from the size of his paws–especially the hind ones–that he is going to be a big cat.

At 4 months, Thor’s male face features also are shaping up. (Watch for a post soon about male and female Maine Coon faces.) He is 7+ pounds here.

Maine Coons grow in length as well as height. You can see the framework for growth in this photo. It looks like a kitten head on an adult cat body.

Here’s another photo showing his length. When this photo was taken, he was almost 10 pounds.

There is no comparison in size when you compare Thor’s growth with that of Freya and Siggy at the same age.

Thor is one of the most handsome kittens we have seen in a long while. When you hold him, he looks deeply into your eyes and purrs. This is one of my favorite photos of him at 6 months and 11.3 pounds.

The size of Maine Coons, the largest domestic cat, depends in large part on diet and genetics. Thor’s daily regimen consists of Sheba extra gravy salmon wet food, cooked chicken and turkey, hard-boiled egg yolks and canned tuna. We augment that with Churu lickable treats and broth packets, as it is important for male cats to be hydrated. We free feed with bowls of Science Diet kitten kibbles.
Oh, of course he gets Temptation treats.
As for genetics, his mother Lucy weighs 16 pounds and father King weighs 21 pounds.

The above photos are from Jinxy’s Den Maine Coon Cattery, CFA Registered by the state of Iowa and operated by Susan Evans in Des Moines. We knew of her beautiful kings and queens and put in an application for a kitten 9 months in advance.
We asked Susan to estimate Thor’s adult size. She thinks that he may actually surpass the weight of his father. We’re anticipating a 23-25 pound adult Thor!
