If you want a Maine Coon, you not only have to ensure that the breeder is registered, but also should decide whether you prefer an American or European variety.
The European Maine Coon has a wilder look with higher cheekbones, a square and large muzzle and lynx tips that make them look, well, like a lynx.

King Thor is a European breed. Note the square muzzle that will continue growing as he is only one year old.

European Maine Coons are breed to have a wild feral look while American Maine Coons are breed to the original standard, i.e., how they looked decades ago in this country. Also, European breed are generally taller with more erect ears placed closer together.

Breeders of European Maine Coons continue to exaggerate these features, as the example below.

European Maine Coons typically are bred to be larger than the American variety, including a broader chest and heavier bone structure. The muzzle is also flatter when viewed from side.

Nevertheless, both breeds have more in common. They both will be large, long-bodied and muscular. Their coat and especially their mane will be thick, shaggy and water-resistant. They both will be highly intelligence and dog-like, playing games like fetch, walk on leashes and even follow commands. They both chirp and sing in a variety of octaves.
And they both cost plenty, typically between $1000-3000 from reputable breeders listed by Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA).
