If you frequent Facebook groups dedicated to Maine Coons, you will come away with some false impressions: All MCs are huge and affectionate and keep growing for five years. There are dozens of FB MC groups. Here’s just a smidgeon:

You’ll see cats like this on those pages:

Fact is, MCs’ normal weight is 8-12 pounds for females and 12-18 pounds for males. Yes, that’s still a big cat; but those posts (mostly by breeders) of humongous kittens are the exception, not the rule.
Freya is one year old and weighs 7.5 lbs. She’ll probably top out at 10-11 pounds. While it is true that MCs grow up to five years, the bulk of growth happens in the first and second years with slight growth thereafter.
What remains for 5 years is the kitten-like playful behavior.
Here is Freya at one year:

True, some MCs are so-called Velcro cats with lots of purrs and cuddles. All cats are different, in many respects. But the breed in general likes to maintain space from its guardians and typically will show affection by following you from room to room, cuddling at night in your bed and/or just keeping you within earshot.
If you are looking for a large Velcro cat, we recommend Ragdolls. If you are looking for a cat in a dog suit who will play fetch with you and make biscuits when you’re asleep in your bed at night, then a MC is for you.
