Kittens overthink how to get in and out.
Freya and Siggy live in a large house that has four litter boxes. Two new ones have lids. We’re recommending one but not the other … at least until my kittens figure out how to push past the lid into the litter.
This one is Vibrant Life Mega Smart Cat Cove Covered Litterbox, which you can buy at Walmart for about $30.

For the past week, Freya and Siggy have been trying to figure out how to get into the box. Here’s a video.
The kittens also could not figure out this brand, Amazon Basics No-Mess Hooded Cat Litter Box, which sells for about $40.

But the beauty of this box is the lid that folds back and allows the kittens to enter as they would an unlidded box.
To get the cats to try the Walmart box, which fascinates them like a toy, I deposited some of Siggy’s poo there so it has her scent. With Freya’s help, she got into the box, did her business, and then meowed to get out.
She felt trapped. Oh, my.
We’re still working on this as I don’t want to disassemble the box so it works without a lid, which is there to help stop odors. (The box also comes with a filter.)
In sum, both boxes are large enough for Maine Coons, but I would still recommend the Amazon brand (large size) for guardians like me trying to teach kittens how to push lids.
